A good away-day venue does three things at once: enough meeting space to break out into groups, enough outdoor space to run a non-screen activity, and bedrooms close enough that no one has to drive after dinner. Surprisingly few venues do all three within 90 minutes of central London.
Country house hotels with grounds
The default for any team off-site over 25 people. Look for venues with a dedicated conference suite (not just a flipped ballroom), and confirm group bedroom rates separately — most country houses are happy to do a corporate rate that bears no resemblance to their public weekend pricing.
Purpose-built conference centres
If the day is genuinely a working session — strategy off-sites, sales kick-offs, training — a purpose-built conference centre will save you a lot of pain on AV, breakout rooms and catering logistics versus a hotel. Worth the slightly less inspiring backdrop.
Historic estates and member clubs
Best for board off-sites and leadership team away-days where the brief is 'somewhere we'd never normally go'. Smaller numbers (15–40) tend to work best in this category.
- Confirm bedroom block pricing in writing before signing
- Ask for a sample running order from a comparable past event
- Walk the breakout rooms before signing — capacity-on-paper rarely matches the room
