A 40th is the milestone that splits cleanly: half the guest list wants a long lunch with a great wine list, the other half wants a dance floor at 11pm. The trick is picking a venue that can do both without feeling like a hotel function room.
Private dining rooms (20–60 guests)
Best for the 'long lunch into the evening' format. Look for somewhere with a separate bar area or terrace so guests have somewhere to move when they get up from the table.
Country house hire (40–120 guests)
Take over a country house for the weekend, put close friends and family in the bedrooms and run it as a Friday-to-Sunday rather than a single evening. Far better value per head than a London venue once you factor in the bedrooms.
- Restoration manor houses within an hour of London
- Boutique hotels with full buy-out options for under 50
- Estates with marquee-ready grounds for 100+
Screening rooms
An underrated option — a private screening of a film from the year you were born, with drinks and canapés before, and a small dance floor in an adjoining bar after. Works brilliantly for 40–80 guests.
